The rigorous testing is critical to the success of a business application during the production run. In order to address this, automation of testing is being practiced in select problem areas under testing discipline. Automation of testing process offers many key advantages such as accuracy and completeness in testing and for the businesses it offers faster time-to-market and enhanced customer satisfaction. On the other hand, automation of testing raises a yet another key challenge of ensuring higher return on investment.

This fact has brought various problems for the test analysts to solve:

How effective is the test automation?
Is the application being over-tested?
When is the automation enough?
How resource costs can be cut?
What should and should not be automated?
How can the training costs be reduced? …. And so on.

The purpose of the discussion is identifying and sharing solutions for common key issues inside the basket of these problems.

Various ways can be sought out for increasing the ROI while automating. It can be - making automation effective and efficient, minimizing the sample data, reduction in the manual efforts when expensive, reducing the cost of automation, creating reusable solutions and many more. All possible ways need to be mulled over during the proposal or feasibility study of an automation solution. Moreover, the approach that is to be adopted to compute the ROI will also stand very critical thru the proposals phase itself. Budgeting automation costs rightly in order to orient the corresponding product life-cycle phases towards success, cost justifications for automation by predicting the possible damages to the business due to under-tested application or any defect detection delays, will matter a lot.
